It’s opera, not opry, this Saturday at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum as the HCA/TriStar Nashville Opera ON TOUR production of Little Red’s Most Unusual Day offers a free public performance. That 10 a.m. show will be the first of seven public presentations.
The 40-minute piece is John Davies’ operatic twist on the Little Red Riding Hood story: Forest Ranger Dudley is too shy to ask Little Red’s mom, the widow Hood, to the Forest Ranger Ball, so he leaves an invitation in a basket of flowers outside Little Red’s house. Unfortunately, the basket is delivered to Granny; in the resulting confusion Dudley loses his pants, Granny kisses the Wolf, Mom gets impatient and Little Red gets in trouble. In the end, everyone experiences – in one way or another – a most unusual day.
This student-friendly show is sung in English and features music from operas by Jacques Offenbach and Gioachino Rossini. The ON TOUR audience-interactive program goes directly to schools with full sets, costumes, four professional opera singers and a pianist, who are all members of Nashville Opera’s Mary Ragland Young Artist Program: soprano Kristina Bachrach, mezzo-soprano Caitlin McKechney, tenor Gregory M. Spock, baritone Ted Ferderle and pianist Eun Kung Lee.
Participating schools receive an extensive study guide designed not only to prepare them for the performance but also supplement learning in the classroom. They may also request a free post-performance workshop.
The ON TOUR program aligns with Tennessee Curriculum Standards for Music, Theatre, Dance, Visual Arts, Reading, Writing, History, Social Studies, Math and Sciences. Last season ON TOUR’s Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing was seen by about 25,000 students, teachers, and parents in more than 40 different schools throughout 18 Middle Tennessee counties.
