Nashville is getting plenty of plaudits for its artistic community these days. Now Music City-based actor and screenwriter Cris Cunningham can be added to that growing list after he won awards for both of those skills at the CineRocKom International Film Festival. The festival’s 2013 award ceremony was held Oct. 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Cunningham received the festival’s Platinum Award (Second Place) for Best Actor for his performance in Vacant House, which he co-wrote with Director Jeremy Casper. The duo won the Diamond Award (First Place) for Best Screenplay, which Cunningham says is “…very humbling and quite an honor,” and the film received the Silver Award (Fourth Place) for Best Director (Casper), Best Actress (Dee Ann Newkirk) and Best Feature Film.
The competition jury was comprised of individuals from the worldwide film community. It narrowed the official selections to films produced by Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Israel, Malaysia, Poland, United Arab Emirates, USA and the UK.
“In all of my years of directing,” says Casper, “I’ve never worked with an actor who took the craft of acting and writing as seriously as Cris – he is utterly committed to creating the best work possible! He deserved to win.”
Vacant House is a psychological thriller that explores one man’s escape from prison and his broken journey toward forgiveness and redemption, according to the filmmakers. The film’s official website is at cornfedpictures.wix.com/vacanthousethemovie.
Cunningham has worked as primary producer and writer of more than 40 nationally televised documentaries and has had more than 30 short films produced; Vacant House is the first feature length film he has produced.
