August 23 marks the 100th anniversary of Gene Kelly’s birth. Belcourt Theatre celebrates the legendary dancer, actor, director and choreographer with a special six-film series that begins Saturday and runs through Sept. 9.
Kelly died in 1996, but fans can watch this multi-talented performer in screenings of archival 35mm prints that feature memorable moments from his remarkable entertainment career. The series kicks off Saturday and Sunday with Cover Girl co-starring Rita Hayworth. Then comes The Pirate (Aug. 11-12) with Judy Garland; Take Me Out to the Ballgame (Aug. 18-19) and On the Town (Aug. 25-26) which both feature Frank Sinatra alongside Kelly; and It’s Always Fair Weather (Sept. 8-9) co-starring Cyd Charisse.
The 1951 Academy Award-winning An American in Paris (Sept. 1-2) with Leslie Caron, music from the Gershwin brothers and Kelly’s breathtaking choreography highlights this remarkable series of films. The Gene Kelly 100th Birthday Celebration series is made possible with the generous support of Nina and H.G. Webb.
