The Belcourt Theatre will present “Alfred Hitchcock: Master of Suspense” from Dec. 26 through Jan. 17. The 24-film series opens with Vertigo and continues with Rear Window, Strangers on a Train, To Catch a Thief, North by Northwest, The Birds, Psycho and other classics. And just in time for holiday shopping discounted ticket packages will go on sale Black Friday.
With the imminent release of a new Hitchcock biopic about the making of Psycho that stars Anthony Hopkins as master director and Helen Mirren as his wife Alma Reville – it’s scheduled to open in Nashville Dec. 7 – as well as the upcoming U.S. tour of the director’s early silent motion pictures recently restored by the British Film Institute the timing of this series couldn’t be better. “Alfred Hitchcock: Master of Suspense” starts with Vertigo, the movie named the “Greatest Film of All Time” by the BFI’s long-running Sight & Sound poll. Then it focuses on three films Hitch made with Jimmy Stewart: Rope, Rear Window and The Man Who Knew Too Much.
Next the series will explore Blackmail and some key films from the early sound/British era. It also will look at such lead actors and muses as Joan Fontaine, Madeleine Carroll, Farley Granger, Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman and Tippi Hedren. The way the series is scheduled weekend moviegoers can spend nearly every Saturday and Sunday exploring Hitchcock’s work with an actor or within an era without a single repeated film.
Discounted ticket packages – a Six-Pack for $39 ($30 Belcourt member) and a Full Series Pass for $138 ($115 Belcourt member) – are available Friday (Nov. 23) at www.belcourt.org.
